Metallica Unveils Trailer for Powerful New Documentary Metallica Saved My Life, Directed by Jonas Åkerlund
Metallica has officially released the teaser trailer for their upcoming documentary Metallica Saved My Life, a deeply emotional and fan-centric film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund. Best known for Lords of Chaos and his longtime collaboration with the band on music videos such as “Whiskey in the Jar,” “Turn the Page,” and “ManUNkind,” Åkerlund brings a unique visual style and storytelling depth to this compelling new project.

A Celebration of Metallica’s Global Fan Community
Unlike any of their previous film ventures, Metallica Saved My Life shifts the spotlight away from the band’s rise to fame and instead focuses on the millions of passionate fans around the world whose lives have been profoundly shaped by Metallica’s music. The documentary explores deeply personal stories of resilience, transformation, and connection — showing how the band’s heavy sound and powerful lyrics became a lifeline for so many during times of hardship and healing.

The film will feature all four members of Metallica, along with actor and lifelong Metallica superfan Jason Momoa, in a rare and heartfelt appearance. According to the band, the film has been years in the making and serves as both a tribute and a thank-you to their loyal community of listeners.

“As a few of you may know, we’ve been working behind the scenes the last couple of years on a new film that will be released later this year starring you guys!” the band shared in a statement. “Metallica Saved My Life explores our world through the lives of fans who have supported each other through highs, lows, trials, and triumphs for over four decades. And yeah, we’re in it a little bit too.”

U.S. Screenings Begin This Spring – Limited Tickets Available
The film will be screened in select theaters across the United States from April through June 2025. Tickets are currently available for most tour cities via the Fathom Events website, with a strict limit of two tickets per person to ensure more fans get a chance to attend.

The band noted that tickets for Columbus are not yet on sale but encouraged fans to act quickly, as screenings may sell out fast. If your city isn’t on the list or you can’t attend in person, don’t worry — the full documentary is expected to receive a wider release later this year.

“We’ll keep a close eye on sales and add screenings where possible should your city sell out quickly,” Metallica added. “If the film is not coming to your city or you can’t make it this time, never fear – the full documentary is expected to be released later this year.”

A Legacy of Metallica Films Continues
Metallica Saved My Life marks the band’s third major cinematic release. It follows the critically acclaimed 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster, which gave fans unprecedented access to the band’s internal struggles, and 2013’s ambitious action/concert film hybrid Metallica: Through the Never. This latest documentary continues the evolution of how Metallica connects with fans on screen — this time, by letting the fans tell their own stories.

Star-Studded Appearances in a Year of Iconic Rock Documentaries
The new documentary is not only packed with powerful testimonials from fans, but also features appearances by several high-profile figures in music and film. Alongside Jason Momoa and the band members themselves, audiences can expect to see Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, KISS bassist Gene Simmons, and Academy Award-winning actor Javier Bardem sharing their thoughts and experiences.

This project also arrives at a time when the rock and metal documentary genre is experiencing a resurgence. Just weeks ago, Iron Maiden announced plans for their own 50th anniversary documentary, slated to hit theaters in the fall — signaling a renewed interest in the deeper cultural impact of heavy metal’s most influential bands.
